Met Malaysia: no tsunami threat for Malaysia from Tonga volcano eruption

SHAH ALAM -- There is no immediate tsunami threat to Malaysia following an underwater volcano eruption of the coast of Tonga, earlier today, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

In a brief statement, MetMalaysia explained that following the incident that occurred at 12:27 pm (Malaysia time), Jan 15, 2022, and based on continuous monitoring, tide gauge readings, international and local buoys as well as information from the Regional Tsunami Service

Provider's website, found that there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia.

"MetMalaysia will continue to monitor the development of the incident and will inform on updates from time to time,'' said the statement.

Tonga is a small island nation in the South Pacific.

The underwater volcano erupted on Saturday and even earlier today, causing tsunamis to hit Hawaii, Japan and Tonga's largest island, sending waves flooding into its capital, according to CNN.
