First Orang Asli MP thank Umno, BN for Deputy Speaker’s post nomination

SHAH ALAM - The country's first Orang Asli MP Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor said his nomination as the Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker proves that representatives from the community were capable of carrying out the task.

He said this while expressing gratitude to Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) for nominating him for the post.

In a statement, Ramli said he vowed to carry out the responsibility with integrity and in a just manner based on the principles of freedom of expression when presiding over any motions that were tabled.

"I thank BN and Umno for the nomination.

"I promise to carry out this responsibility with integrity when discussing any motions in the interest of the people," said the Cameron Highlands MP.

Yesterday, Ramli made history as the country's first MP from the Orang Asli community to sit in as the temporary Dewan Rakyat Speaker to fill in for Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun who was away chairing a chamber meeting at 2.30pm on Tuesday.

The Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker’s position fell vacant when Pengerang MP Datuk Seri Azalina Othman resigned on Aug 23, last year.
