Two million recipients waiting for last-minute booster shots

SHAH ALAM - The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) expects more than two million recipients of the Sinovac vaccine who have not yet received a booster dose to take it at the last minute.

MMA President Dr Koh Kah Chai said this is because it has become a culture of Malaysians who are notorious for doing things at the last minute.

"I hope that people will take immediate action because if the vaccine status is affected, it will be difficult to gain it back,” he said to Sinar Harian.

On Friday, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said more than two million Sinovac vaccine recipients would lose their full vaccination status by April 1st.

Khairy added that the government have repeatedly advised Malaysians to take their booster dose since Dec 16 of last year.

He also added that a reminder was given on Feb 7 and an extension was given until Feb 24.

Commenting further, Dr Koh stated he was worried that many weren't able to meet the deadline despite repeated reminders.

"Evidence has shown that those vaccinated with two doses of Sinovac vaccine will need a booster dose to ensure adequate levels of immunity.

"This is especially for the elderly and individuals with morbidity. Please get your booster before it's too late." he cautioned Malaysians.

At the same time, he appreciated ProtectHealth’s move to provide vaccine services at home to seniors citizens who are unable to go to the vaccine centres.

"However, it may be too late for many to utilise this service due to a limited time window," he explained.
