KOTA KINABALU - A vocational teacher from Sabah has been recognised by the Cambridge University Press as the winner of Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia region's 2022 Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Awards, a global competition that recognises and honours teachers all across the world.

Khalifa Affnan from Keningau Vocational College received the annual award for bringing the world to his students.

According to Khalifa's nominator, he launched a science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) project at the school where he trains students in robotics, drones, coding and other technology-based disciplines.

Khalifa's efforts led to a higher level of active participation in STEM activities among female and special needs students.

The year's award recognised teachers who went the extra mile to keep students learning even when schools were closed.

"I’d like to congratulate our deserving regional winners and extend my heartfelt gratitude to all teachers throughout the world for ensuring that learning thrives,” said Publishing Director for Education at Cambridge University Press Matthew Walker.

"We are in the midst of a period of truly fast transformation. The world today, particularly in the field of education, looks and operates in a very different way than it did even two and a half years ago," he was quoted in Daily Express, an east Malaysia online website.

Walker said predicting how the world will look in 20 years was extremely difficult.
"Reading over the nominations this year, it’s evident that the extraordinary people who choose to become teachers are the best people to prepare students for this unknown future -to teach what it means to be adaptive, creative, and resilient,” Walker said.

The English teacher also received the Community Award for Citizenship at GESS Education Award, Dubai.
