KUALA LUMPUR - The much-anticipated debate between opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak will be held at the Malaysian Tourism Centre (Matic), here, tonight.

The topics both politicians would touch on are whether the government should assist ailing oil and gas company Sapura Energy Bhd as well as the future of the economy and politics in the country.

Political analyst Professor Dr Mohd Azizuddin Mohd said the debate was an indication that the democracy in the country was getting matured.

"Our democracy is getting matured by allowing this debate in harmony and civility where our national agenda and policy will be debated for public knowledge and understanding," he told Sinar Daily.

He added that both Anwar Ibrahim and Najib Razak would be present during the debate session as they would use the platform for their benefit, both personal and for the parties they were representing.

The grand debate between Anwar Ibrahim and Najib Razak will start at 9pm today and will be aired on television through Astro Awani as well as through Sinar Harian, Sinar Daily, Malaysia Gazette, and Sin Chew Daily official Facebook accounts.

There will be three segments in the debate; Sapura Energy, The Future of Malaysia followed by a question and answer session.

Although there will be no official winner, the debate can potentially offer a glimpse of what their parties have in store ahead of the General Election.
