The Louvre Museum welcomes thousands of visitors each day where people come to see the best-known works of art such as the Mona Lisa portrait.

Yesterday, a man disguised as an old woman in a wheelchair caused a bit of a mayhem when he wheeled himself to the front and smeared cake all over Mona Lisa in what appeared to be a climate protest.

Luckily, the painting was protected by a layer of bulletproof glass and was left unharmed. He was eventually escorted out by security.

According to a twitter user, the ‘old woman’ yelled "Think about the Earth. Think about the Earth, there are people who are destroying the Earth. Think about it. All artists think about the Earth. That's why I did this. Think about the planet," while being dragged out of the museum.

According to eyewitnesses as reported by a news portal, the perpetrator first tried to destroy the display case but to no avail. He then proceeded to smear the glass with cake.

However, the motive and how he smuggled the cake into the museum remains unconfirmed.

To note, it is not the first time the painting had been vandalised as back in 1956, the lower part of the masterpiece was severely damaged when a vandal doused the painting with acid which led the painting to be kept behind bulletproof glass.
