Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah says poor drainage system has led to floods in the country.
KUALA LUMPUR: Putrajaya should tackle the drainage issue in the country instead of profiting from the yearly floods that hit Malaysia.

Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah said poor drainage was the main issue that led to floods in the country.

"The key to addressing the issue is the drainage. Government should do more to prevent floods.

"Our country is developing fast with better highways, trains and transportation system but one aspect that was not looked into was the drainage,” she said when met today.

Chin was commenting on the issue of the flood following Padang Rengas MP Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz's comments that the year-end floods were an opportunity to promote volunteer tourism.

She chided Nazri’s remarks, saying that the latter was not making any sense, especially since the issue involved the people’s lives.

"During floods, Malaysians can be seen helping other Malaysians.

"We should continue building the same spirit among us rather than using it (floods) for-profits,” she said.

She said in her Petaling Jaya constituency floods often took place at the Federal Highway, Seri Manja, Taman Medan and Taman Buana due to poor drainage.

Nazri, who was the Former Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister had said that the country should seek opportunities during hard times instead of crying over things that were clearly beyond control.
