DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook says Umno President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi may push for snap elections.

SHAH ALAM - DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook predicts elections may be held "later" and not in September or November after the national budget.

This comes despite Umno President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi calling for snap elections.

"I don't think the elections will be held soon. I think it may be held later,” he told Sinar Daily Politically Frank segment. He was asked if elections will be held in September, November or next year.

Loke further said he would defend his Seremban parliamentary seat for the 15th General Election (GE15), stating "this is my hometown".

Commenting on DAP’s abysmal performance during the Johor elections, he said it may be due to voters being dissatisfied with the party’s performance.

"(However) its a lesson for us, we hear them and we look at ways to improve our performance and we definitely will try to do better (for GE15),” he said.

Loke also said that DAP will focus on strengthening PH and DAP’s machinery to gain public support.

"I think we have made our stands clear that we should strengthen PH and DAP and when the time comes,we will face election under PH, hopefully. PH can regain the support from the public,” he added.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and PH signed the first Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Sept 2021 to restore political stability while the government looks at curbing Covid-19 pandemic and to aid economic recovery.

While the MoU has no expiration date, it states that the government and PH agreed not to convene GE15 before July 31.
