SHAH ALAM - Students will no longer be required to wear facemasks in schools, said Education Minister Datuk Radzi Jidin.

He said this comes after the health ministry's announcement that wearing facemasks in closed areas was now optional with immediate effect.

"I would like to clarify that wearing a face covering inside or outside the school building is now an individual choice. Not compulsory.

"However, strongly encourage students to wear facemask in the school area, especially in places where there are many people," he said in a video shared via his official Facebook.

Radzi said the decision was made after taking into account the current Covid-19 situation.

However, children who take public transport to school will be reminded to wear face masks.

"The situation in schools is safe," he said.
