KUALA LUMPUR - Umno do not need to beg to be part of the government unless the Prime Minister's candidate is from that party, Ketereh Umno chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa said today.

Annuar said Umno should remain the opposition without having to join Pakatan Harapan (PH) or Perikatan Nasional (PN) to form a government, while he reiterrated the call for Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to step down and make way for other leaders to determine the direction of the party.

"Ahmad Zahid needs to retreat and have a big heart to accept this. If he doesn’t do so, I fear that more damage will be done. To avoid greater harm, let him be the one who steps down. He has nothing to lose, " he said at a press conference with UMNO Division Chiefs at the Riverside Restaurant in Jalan Tun Ismail here on Monday.

Meanwhile, Batu UMNO chief Datuk Yahya Mat Ghani stressed that the party is not a 'king maker' but UMNO's struggle is for the Malays and Malaysian people.

"People say it's fun for UMNO to be able to be a kingmaker, to decide who the Prime Minister and deputy are. No, that's not our fight. We don't want to be kingmaker, we want to fight for the fate of the Malays and the people of Malaysia. People rejected us only temporarily and we are confident we will bounce back in the next five years," he said.
