Azalina aims to reform outdated laws and separation of powers

SHAH ALAM - Newly-minted Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Azalina Othman Said said she's grateful to be part the recently-formed Cabinet, stressing that she will start her duties by reforming outdated laws.

Azalina who was given the portfolio of Law and Institutional Reforms, pointed out that one of reforms she that intended to do was regarding the separation of powers between the Attorney-General and Public Prosecutor.

"This is to preserve the independence of the Public Prosecutor's discretion," said Azalina in her statement, thanking Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who appointed her, along with 28 other politicians in the new Cabinet.

She also added that in order to restore rights to the weak, the marginalized, and those who were not treated equitably in our country, she will see to it that progress is made on open problems, such as the citizenship status of children born abroad to Malaysian mothers.

Considering the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and the anticipated economic slump in 2023, there are numerous obstacles that this unity government will have to face as it completes its current term.

"I look forward to working alongside elected representatives from various parties to address the challenges that lie ahead," she said.

She expressed her gratitude to the voters of Pengerang for electing her, and she will not take this mandate lightly and will carry out the duty as much as she can.

Azalina also a member of the Umno supreme council, retained the parliamentary constituency of Pengerang after she managed to pull 21,738 votes in the 15th General Election (GE15).
