IPOH - Perak Umno says it will let the party's Supreme Working Council (MKT) to decide whether top posts in the party should be contested or otherwise.

Its chairman, Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said no decision has been made on the state's part as they are awaiting discussions with MKT.

"No decisions have been made thus far; only the division chief of Sungai Besar Umno, Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos, has done so.

"We (Perak Umno) will have a meeting on Jan 8 and the MKT meeting on Jan 5.We will discuss within MKT first and see the situation because there are pros and cons regarding it (roles contested)," he added.

Saarani said during a press conference after presenting an education fund donation to the national sprinter Muhammad Azeem Fahmi and incentives to the Perak Men's hockey team at the Perak Menteri Besar's office on Friday.

He was confident the Umno MKT would make the best decision in the best interest of the party.

Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said previously that this decision has to be made unanimously and democratically by the party's delegates, Sarani added.

"I believe Zahid had explained in a recent interview that he would not interfere with the democratic process of deciding what's best for the party and will give the freedom. There are no finalised decisions (as of now) from the party," he said.

Several Umno leaders had urged that the president and deputy president posts should not be contested to ensure the unity of the party.

However, some parties felt that both roles should be contested.

Umno Secretary General Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan on Monday said the party had yet to make a decision regarding the matter and would discuss it in the MKT meeting.
