IPOH - More than three million vehicles are expected to enter Perak via the North-South Expressway and the West Coast Expressway (WCE) ahead of the Aidilfitri celebration this year.

State Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said traffic would be heavy especially during peak days on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

"Motorists coming from Selangor such as Kuala Selangor, Banting and Sabak Bernam would be using the WCE to ease the load on the NSE route or the old road.

"According to the Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA), more than two million road users would be on the highways nonetheless, the Perak Road Transport Department (RTD) is projecting three million vehicles on the highways in Perak on the three peak days,” he said.

He told a media conference after launching the 2023 Hari Raya Aidilfitri Road Safety Campaign by the Perak Road Safety Council (MKJR) and Perak RTD at Mydin Mall in Meru Raya here today.

Also present were Perak RTD director Mohammad Yusoff Abustan and Perak MKJR deputy chairman Datuk Nor Sham Rahman.

Mohammad Nizar said highway users are advised to adhere to the recommended travel time advisory (TTA) to avoid getting stuck in traffic on their way home from the festival.

"The state government hopes that road users take safety aspects into consideration while driving, in addition to always being calm, alert and patient while driving.

"We hope the Perak MKJR would achieve the target of reducing the number of road accident deaths by 50 per cent by the end of 2030," he said.

He also reminded road users to always be vigilant especially at accident spots such as the Menora Tunnel, the Ipoh-Lumut Highway, especially in Batu Gajah to Siputeh, Tronoh and around Manjung, especially in the port near Kampung Acheh - BERNAMA
