Beware of 'Pink WhatsApp': MCMC raise concerns

SHAH ALAM - The public is being warned to be wary of accepting invitations or downloading the malicious 'Pink WhatsApp' application.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has revealed that this application can expose smartphone users to serious security risks, allowing unauthorised access to various personal items on their devices, including images, messages, and contact lists.

"Users will receive messages and links that appear to be from WhatsApp, enticing them to try out this new application.

"MCMC strongly advises users not to download or install the 'Pink WhatsApp' application and to promptly delete it from their smartphones if it has already been installed," MCMC said in a statement on Tuesday.

The public is advised to only download mobile applications from official sources such as the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, and Huawei AppGallery.

It is crucial to exercise caution when encountering suspicious links.

MCMC stresses the importance of being vigilant while using mobile applications, taking proactive measures to safeguard personal information, and refraining from downloading any malicious applications.

"Users are urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to 'Pink WhatsApp' via the MCMC Complaints Portal at the following link: https://aduan.mcmc.gov.my/#/public/main or by contacting the complaints hotline at 1800-188-030," added MCMC.
