Five states dominate in May 2023 exports with combined 82.5 pct share - DoSM
KUALA LUMPUR - Penang, Johor, Selangor, Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur emerged as the top five exporters in May 2023, contributing 82.5 per cent of Malaysia’s total exports of RM119.6 billion for the month, said the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM).
It said the nation’s total trade amounted to RM223.8 billion in May, with imports at RM104.2 billion.
Penang remained the top exporter with a 29.0 per cent share, followed by Johor (21.1 per cent), Selangor (18.5 per cent), Sarawak (8.1 per cent) and Kuala Lumpur (5.8 per cent), the agency said in a statement today.
DoSM said exports decreased by 0.7 per cent or RM884.4 million compared with the same month in 2022, while imports fell by 3.3 per cent year-on-year or RM3.6 billion.
Most states recorded lower exports, including Penang (-RM2.4 billion), Sabah (-RM1.1 billion), Sarawak (-RM942.2 million), Pahang (-RM742.7 million), Labuan (-RM594.2 million), Terengganu (-RM394.3 million), Perak (-RM156.3 million) and Johor (-RM71.0 million).
However, exports were higher from Selangor (up RM2.0 billion), Kuala Lumpur (+RM1.3 billion), Kedah (+RM1.0 billion), Negeri Sembilan (+RM423.4 million), Melaka (+RM324.1 million), Kelantan (+RM273.0 million) and Perlis (+RM3.5 million).
Meanwhile, states registering lower imports were Penang (-RM7.9 billion), Kedah (-RM1.2 billion), Kuala Lumpur (-RM1.2 billion), Perak (-RM325.3 million), Labuan (-RM190.1 million) and Pahang (-RM21.2 million).
On the other hand, nine states recorded an increase in imports, namely Selangor (+RM3.3 billion), Johor (+RM1.4 billion), Melaka (+RM1.2 billion), Sarawak (+RM733.3 million), Terengganu (+RM290.5 million), Negeri Sembilan (+RM143.2 million), Sabah (+RM119.7 million), Perlis (+RM37.9 million) and Kelantan (+RM7.9 million).
DoSM said Selangor continued to dominate Malaysia’s imports with a share of 28.1 per cent, followed by Johor (22.2 per cent), Penang (19.7 per cent), Kuala Lumpur (6.7 per cent) and Kedah (4.8 per cent). - BERNAMA
