Teen boy assaulted by group of students over a girl

JOHOR BAHRU - A teenage boy was assaulted by a group of high school students at a recreational area in Taman Bistari Indah here on Aug 9 due to a dispute over a girl.

Johor Bahru South district police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said a report of the incident was received at 4.09pm yesterday from the 15-year-old victim.

He said the police also detected a 59-second video of the incident circulating on social media at 8.45pm last night.

The video depicted a teenage boy being beaten by several other teenage boys in a public place.

"Based on the police report, the victim said he was kicked, stepped on and punched multiple times on his front and back, as well as on his stomach, thighs and left and right arms.

"The victim was assaulted by six local teenage boys and a foreign teenage boy aged between14 to 17," he said in a statement today.

He added that the victim suffered bruises on his left and right arms, swelling on his right thigh and body pains.

He said in response to the information obtained, a team of officers from the Taman Pelangi Indah police station and South Johor Bahru district police headquarters conducted six raids in the area from 5.30pm to 9.34 pm last night.

During the raids, he said police successfully apprehended all the suspects and seized five T-shirts and a mobile phone.

"Investigations revealed that the incident occurred at 3pm on Aug 9 primariy stemmed from the 15-year-old main suspect's discontent regarding the victim's relationship with his girlfriend," he said.

Raub said that all the suspects were brought to the magistrate's court here today for remand under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code and the case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code.

He added that the suspects could face imprisonment for up to two years or a fine, or both, if found guilty.
