Cambodia arrests foreigner, seizing almost 8 kg illicit drugs

PHNOM PENH - Cambodia's anti-drug police have arrested a foreigner for allegedly trafficking illicit drugs and seized approximately 8 kg of narcotics, the Anti-Drug Department (ADP) said on Saturday, reported Xinhua.

The male suspect, 57, was caught Tuesday night during a raid at his rented house in Phnom Penh's Boeung Keng Kang district after an investigation for months.

"A total of 7.94 kilogrammes of ketamine was seized in the suspect's possession during the crackdown," the ADP said.

The Southeast Asian country has no death sentence for a drug trafficker. Under its law, someone found guilty of trafficking more than 80 grams of illicit drugs could be imprisoned for life.

According to the ADP, Cambodia nabbed 10,167 drug-related suspects, including 215 foreigners, during the January-July period of 2023, seizing more than 979 kg of narcotics.

Most of seized drugs were heroin, ecstasy, ketamine, cocaine, crystal methamphetamine, methamphetamine pills and cathinone. - BERNAMA-XINHUA
