Children at risk from toxic plastic toys - CAP

GEORGE TOWN - The Penang Consumers Association (CAP) has issued a strong warning to parents, urging them to avoid plastic toys for their children due to the presence of a harmful chemical known as chlorinated paraffin.

Its president, Mohideen Abdul Kader highlighted the dangers posed by this chemical, which has been linked to liver and kidney damage, endocrine disruption, cancer, developmental brain harm, and reproductive health risks.

Children can be exposed to these chemicals through inhalation of dust, skin contact, or mouthing of toys.

According to Mohideen, evidence suggests that chlorinated paraffin leaches from plastics throughout their lifespan.

A global study by the International Pollutants Elimination Network (IPEN) analysed 31 plastic toys from 10 countries, including Malaysia, and found both short-chain and medium-chain chlorinated paraffin in all samples.

These samples, including inflatable horses, squawking chickens, rubber ducks, dolls, and plastic bears, were tested in a Prague laboratory.

Recent tests in Canada also revealed high concentrations of chlorinated paraffins in toys and electronics, raising further concerns about children's exposure.

"The presence of SCCP in these products is particularly concerning, as infants, young children, and toddlers are vulnerable to exposure from these sources.

"While the tested products were purchased in Canada, they are manufactured for the international market and could be found in Malaysia," Mohideen said.
