Four-month-old baby dies after choking on milk

PUTRAJAYA - A four-month-old baby boy who choked on milk while under the care of a nanny in Putrajaya on Tuesday later died at the hospital on Wednesday.

The tragic incident raised concerns about unlicensed childcare providers and proper infant care procedures.

According to Putrajaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner A Asmadi Abdul Aziz, the ambulance was called to the nanny's residence at around 10.30am on Tuesday.

The nanny, a 52-year-old woman, claimed the baby choked while being fed milk in the recommended inclined position (45-degree angle).

"Despite the nanny's attempts to clear the blockage by patting and rubbing the baby's back, the child became unconscious.

"The nanny then called the baby's parents and emergency services, providing initial breathing assistance until paramedics arrived," he told Sinar today.

He said paramedics continued administering oxygen as they rushed the baby to Putrajaya Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

However, he added, the baby was confirmed dead at about 3pm, on Wednesday.

"Further investigation revealed the nanny was caring for four children aged between four months and three years, including the deceased baby.

"However, authorities discovered that the nanny lacked a valid license and certificate from the Department of Social Welfare (JKM).

He said the case is still under investigation and classified under Section 31 (1) of the Children's Act 2001 and Section 6 (1) of the Foster Care Act 1984.
