Batik pythons lead in Terengganu's snake capture stats
KUALA TERENGGANU - The Terengganu Civil Defence Force (APM) has reported 3,283 cases of snake captures across the state since January.
Its director Lieutenant Colonel (PA) Mohd Rosman Abdullah attributed the rise in snake captures to the current hot and humid weather conditions often experienced during flood season.
"Kuala Terengganu district recorded the highest number, with 217 cases in February alone," he told Sinar when contacted today.
Batik pythons were the most common species captured, with the largest weighing nearly 120 kilogrammes found in Kampung Gong Awang, Kuala Nerus.
"Most snakebite incidents reported occurred within homes or surrounding areas.
"Habitat disturbance or destruction likely forces these snakes to seek shelter and food in residential areas," he added.
He advised the public not to attempt handling snakes on their own and to instead contact APM via the emergency line, MERS 999, for assistance.
"When encountering a snake, provide the APM team with accurate details such as the snake's type, colour, and body pattern.
"Evacuate the premises immediately, closing all doors and windows to prevent the snake from escaping.
"Avoid confronting or provoking the snake, as it may become aggressive when threatened," Rosman added.
