SEPANG - A viral video capturing a man slapping his wife at a shopping centre in Kota Warisan has prompted the police to take swift action.
The incident, which occurred in public, has drawn widespread attention.
Sepang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Norhizam Bahaman confirmed that the authorities received a report from the younger sister of the victim.
"The complainant, who is the victim’s younger sister, confirmed that the woman who was assaulted is her 35-year-old elder sister. The man who hit the victim is a local in his 50s and is also the victim's husband," he said in a statement, today.
The police are currently recording witness statements and working to locate both the suspect and the victim.
"The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code and Section 18 of the Domestic Violence Act 1994.
"Any relevant information can be directed to the Investigating Officer, Assistant Superintendent Mahafiz Mat Lawi, at 010-2396533," he added.
A 29-second video, which has gone viral, showed a woman walking out of the shopping centre holding a plastic bag.
In the video, the woman suddenly stopped as she approached the exit when she spotted the suspect who was wearing a cap walking towards her, accompanied by a child.
The man then suddenly slaps the woman in the face in public while saying something to her. The woman subsequently left the premises.
Authorities urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward as the investigation continues.
