SHAH ALAM - A political observer believes that Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob may face money laundering charges if the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation uncovers solid evidence linking him to the case.
Political analyst Dr Hussain Yusri Zawawi said the cases involving former prime ministers Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin demonstrate that holding a leadership position does not guarantee immunity from legal action.
"In this context, Ismail Sabri’s political survival will depend on the outcome of the MACC investigation.
"If he is charged, it will strengthen the perception that all three prime ministers are facing integrity issues, further eroding public trust in the country’s leadership,” he said.
Hussain stated that the investigation could have political implications for Umno, particularly regarding party leadership and its relationship with the Unity Government, as the Bera MP still commands significant support within the party.
He also pointed out that the MACC’s increased actions against high-profile individuals could be seen from two perspectives: as a genuine effort to combat corruption or as a political tool to pressure certain parties.
"While this reflects the MACC’s commitment to fighting corruption regardless of an individual’s position, there are also differing views, especially if only certain figures are investigated while others avoid scrutiny,” he said.
Meanwhile, Umno Youth Chief Datuk Dr Muhammad Akmal Saleh urged authorities to take action against both those who receive bribes and those who offer them, stressing the need to instill fear among wrongdoers.
"This is why the Political Funding Act must be implemented to identify both recipients and contributors.
"Umno Youth calls on the government to expedite the tabling and implementation of the Political Funding Bill,” he said in a Facebook post.
