Preacher Zamri Vinoth arrested over social media post, sedition probe initiated

SHAH ALAM - Independent preacher Zamri Vinoth was arrested by the police over a Facebook posting.

"The complainant claimed to have read a comment on social media under the name Zamri Vinoth regarding negotiations about the relocation of a temple site at Jalan Munshi Abdullah in Kuala Lumpur, which was provocative and defamed Hinduism.

"We initiated an investigation under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998," he said.

Razarudin added that a mobile phone was seized to assist in the investigation.

"Further action is also being carried out by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) concerning Zamri Vinoth's Facebook account.

"The 41-year-old suspect was taken to the Padang Besar District Police Headquarters lockup and will be remanded at the Kangar Court the next day (Friday)," he said.
