KANGAR - A policeman who was charged with murdering his wife in March 2023 was confirmed dead at the Tuanku Fauziah Hospital (HTF) here yesterday after being found unresponsive at the Perlis Correctional Centre (Malaysian Prisons Department) in Guar Nangka, Arau.
Arau police chief Supt Ahmad Mohsin Md Rodi said the hospital confirmed that the 28-year-old man, originally from Terengganu, was "brought in dead" (BID) at 5.10 pm.
He said that a warden who was on patrol found the man unconscious in his cell at 4.30 pm, adding that the victim was immediately brought to HTF.
"Preliminary investigations by the investigating officer found no elements of foul play in the case that could point to the cause of death," he said in a statement today.
Ahmad Mohsin said the man's body was taken to the Forensic Department of Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar, Kedah, for a post-mortem examination, adding that the case is classified as sudden death pending the post-mortem outcome.
He said the man, who had a psychiatric history and had been referred to several hospitals since 2017, had been placed under remand at the correctional centre since March 17, 2023, under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
On March 5, 2023, media reports cited that a police officer with a lance corporal rank was charged with fatally shooting his wife in Kampung Bendang Baru, Simpang Empat, near Kangar.
The Kangar Magistrate's Court ordered the accused to undergo a psychiatric evaluation under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code. - BERNAMA
