KUALA LUMPUR – A woman facing 743 charges related to unauthorised modifications to a local company’s data system collapsed in the Sessions Court today after the 30th charge was read against her.
The accused, Nora Idayu Jaafar, 48, a former commercial support officer in Astro’s business department, is charged with altering the broadcasting company’s customer data system without authorisation.
According to the charges, Nora Idayu was accused of amending the Astro Customer Relationship Management System (CRM) by converting 743 regular customer accounts into corporate accounts, granting full access to content for free.
The offences were allegedly committed at Astro’s office in Menara Icon, Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur, between 2013 and 2020, with knowledge that such actions would result in unauthorised database content alterations.
All charges were filed under Section 5(1) of the Computer Crimes Act 1997, which carries a maximum fine of RM100,000, imprisonment of up to seven years, or both, upon conviction.
However, proceedings could not continue after the 30th charge was read, as the accused suddenly collapsed and fainted in the dock.
The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Rohaiza Abdul Rahman, while the accused was unrepresented.
Judge Norma Ismail subsequently postponed the proceedings to June 26 to allow the accused to receive medical treatment and rest. Bail was set at RM10,000 for all charges. - AWANI
