SHAH ALAM - Kuala Lumpur will roar to life this October as it plays host to the opening round of the 2025 FIM World Supercross Championship, the first time Malaysia will feature on the international dirt bike calendar.
The announcement, made on June 4 via the championship’s official social media channels, confirmed that the world-class event will kick off at Stadium Merdeka on Oct 18.
The season will span five rounds across five continents, marking the most globally ambitious calendar in the competition’s history.
Promoted by local outfit Data Sukan Sdn Bhd, the landmark event is a major milestone for Malaysia’s growing sports scene.
Data Sukan Chief Executive Director Shamil Yusof expressed excitement to welcome and host the FIM World Supercross Championship at the city.
"It’s a testament to Malaysia’s rising status in global sports and we look forward to providing a thrilling experience for fans, showcasing the vibrant energy of our nation to the world.
"This is also an incredibly exciting period for motorsport lovers in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, with the prestigious 2025 Malaysian Moto Grand Prix following just a week after. It's a fantastic double-header for the region,” he said.
Following the KL curtain-raiser, the championship will move on to Buenos Aires (Nov 8), Vancouver (Nov 15), the Gold Coast (Nov 29) and culminate in a grand finale at DHL Stadium, Cape Town (Dec 13).
"Bringing this race to Kuala Lumpur is a monumental moment for Malaysian sports. As the only Southeast Asian nation to host this prestigious event, we’re incredibly proud to demonstrate our capability to stage world-class competitions.
"This strategically aligns with the Madani government’s vision for attracting sustainable international events, and promises significant growth for Malaysia’s tourism economy,” Shamil added.
The 2025 season also brings a bold new visual identity for World Supercross, with a rebrand featuring a globe-inspired logo and a rugged "W" symbolising the grit and intensity of the sport.
The changes reflect the championship’s evolution under Bia Sports Group, now in its second season at the helm.
World Supercross Chief Executive Officer Tom Burwell said the 2025 calendar is a defining moment for the company as it continues to push the sport to new territories and audiences.
Expanding into new regions like Malaysia, Argentina and South Africa, alongside returning to key markets like Canada and Australia, highlights our vision to make supercross a truly global spectacle. Delivering elite supercross racing to five continents for the first time is a huge moment. This will be the biggest and best season yet,” he said.
The FIM’s Motocross Commission Director Antonio Alia Portela echoed the sentiment, calling the new calendar a ‘bold new era’ for the sport.
For the record, Eli Tomac (450cc), Shane McElrath (250cc) and Fire Power Honda (Team) claimed victory in 2024, but with a new season comes fresh rivalries, intense battles, and the opportunity for new riders to make their mark on a global stage.
Team and rider announcements will be released throughout the year as the pace picks up to the first gate drop in Kuala Lumpur.
