OKU Sentral launches DiveAbility to empower PwD through scuba diving

The initiative aimed to empower persons with disabilities by providing them with adventurous marine experiences.

DUNGUN - OKU Sentral successfully launched DiveAbility, a pioneering scuba diving programme at Tenggol Coral Beach Resort, Pulau Tenggol, here yesterday.

In a statement, OKU Sentral said the initiative, held in collaboration with the Eco District Association, aimed to empower persons with disabilities (PwD) by providing them with adventurous marine experiences.

DiveAbility was spearheaded by former senator Datuk Ras Adiba Radzi and involved five PwD participants, including national para-athletes Izhar Idham and Roozaimi Johar.

"The event was supported by key partners, including the Fire Department Water Rescue Unit (PPDA), Tenggol Coral Beach Resort, Como Conquest, and iLab,” the statement read.

The programme featured immersive scuba diving sessions conducted by certified instructors and supported by trained volunteers, giving PwD participants the opportunity to explore the underwater world safely and confidently.

In addition to diving, several conservation activities were also carried out, including ghost net removal, coral reef protection efforts, and beach clean-ups.

According to the statement, DiveAbility also promotes Terengganu as a friendly and inclusive destination for eco-tourism while raising awareness about the capabilities of the PwD community in contributing to meaningful environmental efforts.

"By championing inclusivity in adventure tourism, DiveAbility shows how accessibility can unlock the potential of the silver economy and drive more sustainable and socially responsible growth in Malaysia’s tourism industry.

"The programme is expected to leave a lasting impact in promoting social inclusion and redefining the role of PwDs in environmental stewardship,” it added. - BERNAMA
