ISTANBUL - Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) rallied from two goals down to beat Tottenham Hotspur on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday in Udine, Italy, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported.
Europa League winners Spurs were 2-0 up with five minutes remaining in regulation after first-half goals from Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. Van de Ven scored in the 39th minute after Lucas Chevalier parried Joao Palhinha’s shot, and Romero added a header from a free-kick in the 48th minute.
PSG thought they had reduced the deficit in the 67th minute when Bradley Barcola scored from close range, but the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.
The Champions League title holders mounted their comeback in the closing minutes. Substitute Lee Kang-in struck in the 85th minute with a powerful finish before Goncalo Ramos netted the equaliser in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
In the penalty shootout, Vitinha missed PSG’s first attempt, but Ramos, Ousmane Dembele, Lee and Nuno Mendes converted the next four. For Spurs, Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pedro Porro scored, while Van de Ven’s shot was saved and Mathys Tel missed.
Paris Saint-Germain became the 26th team to win the UEFA Super Cup and the first French club to achieve the feat.
Real Madrid remain the most successful club in the competition’s history, with six titles after beating Atalanta 2-0 in 2024, ahead of AC Milan and Barcelona with five each. - BERNAMA-ANADOLU
