102-year-old Japanese man becomes oldest to climb Mount Fuji

Kokichi Akuzawa reached the 3,776-metre (12,388-foot) peak on Aug 3 after recovering from heart failure, Guinness said in a statement on its website.

ISTANBUL - A 102-year-old Japanese man has become the oldest person to climb Mount Fuji, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported according to Guinness World Records.

Kokichi Akuzawa reached the 3,776-metre (12,388-foot) peak on Aug 3 after recovering from heart failure, Guinness said in a statement on its website.

Mount Fuji is an active stratovolcano located on the Japanese island of Honshu.

Kokichi climbs mountains almost weekly. He last summited Mount Fuji at the age of 96.

He said this climb felt "a lot different from the last time.” Unlike before, he reached the peak in three days instead of one, spending two nights in huts along the way.

When asked if he wanted to climb Japan’s highest peak again, Kokichi joked, "Never again.”

"If you ask me next year, maybe you’ll get a different answer, but for now, I’m happy with that climb,” he added.

For his 99th birthday, Kokichi climbed to the 1,272-metre (4,173-foot) summit of Nabewariyama mountain. - BERNAMA-ANADOLU
