Several major Western countries have recently announced their intention to recognise Palestinian statehood.

NEW YORK - Belgium has joined a number of other countries in New York in announcing its recognition of a Palestinian state, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

"Through this initiative, we continue to support international law, particularly the right to self-determination of peoples," Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever said on Monday in New York at a conference on the Middle East conflict convened by France and Saudi Arabia.

The meeting, held a day before the start of the high-level debate week at the UN General Assembly, aimed to give new momentum to the two-state solution.

"The two-state solution solution is not dead," De Wever said. "It is bruised, but it can be revived and it must be for the sake of both peoples."
