The three-day celebration was an adventure made up of incredible music, mouthwatering food, cultural experiences, and laid-back coastal vibes.

Are you going to Ombak Festival? Simply Red is coming!

When my friend asked me that question, I lit up instantly. Simply Red in Malaysia? A living legend right here on our shores! For any Gen X-er, the name is a nostalgic punch — we grew up with Mick Hucknall’s soulful voice soundtracking our heartbreaks, first loves, and late-night radio singalongs.

But here’s the thing: Ombak Festival wasn’t just about Simply Red. It was a three-day celebration of everything that makes life good — incredible music, mouthwatering food, cultural experiences, and laid-back coastal vibes.

And the best part? It all happened at Desaru Coast, now making serious waves as a cultural and festival hub in Southeast Asia. With the full support of the resorts in the area, the event had a true community spirit.

If you were there, lucky you. If you missed it — here’s a glimpse of what went down and the highlights that made it unforgettable.

Epic international line-Up

Let’s start with the obvious: the music. Simply Red’s set was a dream come true, but the magic didn’t stop there. Soul queen Joss Stone, funk legends George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic — the lineup was stacked with global icons who had the crowd on their feet.

Southeast Asia was proudly represented too. Powerhouse acts like Joe Flizzow, SonaOne, Ismail Izzani, Zamaera, Phum Viphurit, Diskoria, and The Pinholes brought serious energy and regional flavor to the stage.

Between these performances, DJs dropped hypnotic electro and psychedelic beats that kept the party vibe alive well into the night.

Fun for the whole family

Ombak Festival wasn’t just for music lovers. Families and culture enthusiasts had their share of fun too.

There were hands-on cultural experiences like the Zapin workshop, where festival-goers got to try their hand (and feet) at traditional Malay dance.

Over at the Coast Drum Circle, anyone could jump in and feel the beat — a perfect moment for some carefree, communal rhythm.

There were also thought-provoking talks including a live recording of the popular Keluar Sekejap Podcast at the Village Stage, giving festival-goers something to chew on beyond food and beats.

Culinary heaven

And speaking of food — what’s a festival without it?

Ombak brought the heat, and we’re not just talking about the weather. Gourmet highlights included Sazón Tapas & Grill by Andrew Walsh, delivering elegant Spanish flair, and Carbon KL’s Smoke & Fire, where grilling became an art form.

Flavours of Johor brought a taste of home with beloved local dishes, while Chef Sid Murshid’s live cooking show wowed with a Japanese-inspired seasonal menu curated just for the festival.

Relax and rejuvenate

After all the excitement, festival-goers could wind down in luxury. Anantara Desaru Coast Spa & Wellness offered a full menu of indulgent treatments — from Bamboo Massages and Seashell Therapy, to the luxurious Rise of Naupaka experience.

Guests could even choose their background music and massage oil scent, adding a personal touch to pure relaxation.
