JKR Penang said the road closure was necessary to facilitate clean-up works and other related repairs to be carried out by the contractor appointed by the Southwest District JKR.

"Road users in the affected area are urged to cooperate throughout the closure period and are advised to use alternative routes and plan their journeys accordingly,” the department said in a Facebook statement tonight.

Earlier, media reports stated that the 5 pm incident also caused several trees to fall, blocking the road in the area. The main route linking Balik Pulau and Paya Terubong was subsequently closed to all traffic after being covered by soil and fallen trees, posing a risk to motorists.
