Why Bersatu Dungun believes changing top leaders is key to winning in Terengganu

DUNGUN – Bersatu Dungun division has decided to submit a motion calling for party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to take a break from his duties while also proposing changes to the secretary-general and information chief positions.

Bersatu Dungun chief Datuk Aziz Ismail said the decision was reached through a joint agreement among the division’s leadership, including Srikandi and Armada, during a meeting held on Oct 20.

He said the proposal was not made hastily or as an act of defiance, but rather as a clear message from Bersatu Dungun grassroots members to the party’s top leadership.

“This motion did not come from any tour programme, but was the official outcome of our division meeting on Oct 20.

“We in Dungun are ready to hold our Annual General Meeting (AGM) and will bring this motion to the higher levels of the party,” he said when contacted by Sinar on Sunday.

Aziz added that the division was also conducting a series of tours to explain the internal situation of the party to its members.

He said three motions were approved during the meeting: first, for the president to take a break; second, for a change of secretary-general; and third, for a change of information chief.

According to him, the decision was made after considering several factors, including Muhyiddin’s health and ongoing court cases, as well as the need to stabilise relations with coalition partners, particularly Pas.

At present, Bersatu’s secretary-general post is held by Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, while Datuk Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz serves as the party’s information chief.

“In the context of Terengganu, we do not want any confusion regarding the prime minister candidate or ‘poster boy’ from Bersatu.

“We must maintain good ties with Pas, as this cooperation is crucial for Bersatu to remain strong in the state. Without Pas, it would be impossible for us to win even one seat in Terengganu,” he said.

Aziz stressed that the motion was not meant to weaken the party but to restore confidence and realign Bersatu with its founding principles of rejecting corruption and abuse of power.

He added that Bersatu Dungun believed the party still had significant potential in Terengganu, with at least five state assembly seats and promising opportunities in several parliamentary constituencies if the right strategy was implemented.

“We once championed Bersatu as a platform free from court issues, but now we have been tainted as well. So, we must have the courage to make internal corrections. What we decided in the meeting will not be withdrawn, and whatever happens next, we leave it to the party leadership,” he said.

Aziz had earlier attended the Jelajah Selamatkan Maruah Ahli dan Kepimpinan (Semarak) tour in Pengerang, Johor, on Sunday, where he said he had received messages and calls from unknown numbers afterwards.
