SHAH ALAM – The termination of heritage player contracts following FIFA sanctions has triggered questions over who should take responsibility for their futures.

Sports analyst Datuk Dr Pekan Ramli highlighted concerns over the case of Gabriel Palmero, the first heritage player to have his contract terminated by CD Tenerife after being suspended by FIFA over document falsification.

“People will say that FAM must be responsible. At first glance, it does seem so because FAM was the body sanctioned.

“However, we also need to examine this more deeply. It is not fair to point the finger entirely at FAM without knowing clearly whether the governing body was directly involved in the player’s offer and agreement,” Pekan told Sinar.

He stated that media reports have previously indicated that FAM did not interfere with the recruitment of heritage players, as this was handled by the national team’s management.

Pekan urged those responsible for managing these negotiations to come forward and also cautioned that other heritage players, including Facundo Garcés and Rodrigo Holgado, could face similar outcomes.

“If contracts are terminated due to issues like this, the club does not have to bear any loss. The club does not need to pay compensation because they have valid reasons to terminate the contract. Usually, in a player’s contract, such matters are already accounted for,” he said.
