SHAH ALAM – Malaysia made history as the Sunway Putra Hotel hosted the first-ever International Fashion and Cultural Ambassadors 2025 (1st Session).
Organised by LYS Layar Style and helmed by founder and director Janice Ang, the international event united designers, models and cultural icons from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Taiwan, the United Kingdom (UK) and Romania in a vibrant celebration of fashion, culture and creativity.
The evening was officiated by Majlis Kebudayaan dan Warisan Nusantara (Cultural and Heritage Council of the Archipelago) deputy president Datuk Sri Dr Sri Sukunthan, who delivered an inspiring address highlighting the power of fashion as a bridge between tradition and innovation.
“This gathering of nations speaks to the inclusive spirit of this event and to the recognition that fashion, culture, and heritage transcend national borders,” he said.
He also commended Janice Ang and her team at LYS Layar Style for their visionary effort in establishing an international platform that merges fashion, art and heritage.
He stated that such initiatives not only highlight Malaysia’s creative talents but also position the country as a cultural hub in the region.
The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including Malaysia International Tourism Development Association Deputy President Professor Datuk Azlie Halim and Taiwan Golden International Group President Christine Huang.
A Tapestry of Tradition and Innovation
Sukunthan described the event as a celebration of both artistic excellence and cultural continuity.
Traditional attire such as the kebaya, baju Melayu, Cheongsam and Nyonya costume shared the stage with modern couture, symbolising the harmony between heritage and modernity.
“When we showcase these traditional garments alongside contemporary designs, we are telling stories of our ancestors, of multicultural societies, and of identity in the face of global change,” he added.
The Deputy President emphasised that through fashion and photography, heritage can be reinterpreted and revitalised for a new generation.
“Designers, models, and photographers, he said, are not merely creators but “storytellers who carry the legacy of a community into a global setting.”
Promoting Cultural Diplomacy and Sustainability
Highlighting the economic and diplomatic value of creative industries, Sukunthan called the event a form of cultural diplomacy, where fashion serves as a universal language between nations.
He urged participants to uphold authenticity and sustainability, ensuring that traditional craftsmanship is honoured and preserved.
“While innovation is welcome, authenticity must underpin everything. When we interpret our traditional costumes, we must honour their origins, craftsmanship, symbolism and meaning,” he said, calling for inclusivity and the support of young designers and artisans.
He also encouraged the continuation of such programmes beyond the runway to promote sustainable production, ethical supply chains and craft education.
Aligning with Malaysia Madani and Visit Malaysia 2026
Sukunthan drew a connection between the event and the Malaysia Madani concept introduced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, which envisions a civil, compassionate society rooted in cultural values and inclusivity.
“The International Fashion and Culture Ambassadors event reflects this vision by uniting communities, preserving heritage, and fostering mutual respect.
“Through traditional costume performances, Malaysians celebrate diversity, uphold artistic expression, and strengthen national identity, aligning perfectly with Madani’s call for harmony, dignity and cultural appreciation,” he said.
He also highlighted how such cultural initiatives contribute toward the success of Visit Malaysia 2026, by promoting Malaysia as a destination rich in creativity, craftsmanship and cultural diversity.
A Beacon of Collaboration and Cultural Pride
Sukunthan officially declared the International Fashion and Cultural Ambassadors 2025 (1st Session) open, congratulating award recipients and participants for their dedication to cultural artistry.
“May this first session be the first of many. May it kindle new ideas, new partnerships, and new possibilities, and may the heritage of all participating nations shine brightly through the art of fashion, photography and cultural performance,” he added.
