SHAH ALAM - No decision to either stay or leave Barisan Nasional (BN) was made by MIC during its 79th Annual General Assembly at the Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) here on Sunday.
Any decision regarding the party's position in BN has beenhanded over to MIC President, Tan Sri S. A. Vigneswaran and the Central Working Committee (CWC).
Earlier, MIC Deputy President Datuk Seri M. Saravanan presented three resolutions, including a proposal to leave BN and make an official application to join the opposition coalition, Perikatan Nasional (PN).
Although delegates discussed the resolution, no voting was done as the assembly agreed to hand over the decision to Vigneswaran and the MIC top leadership.
A foundational pillar of Malaysian politics, MIC was one of the original architects of the BN coalition, which has governed since the nation's independence in 1957.
MIC was established in August 1946, after the Second World War, to fight for India's independence from British colonisation.
After India achieved independence, MIC then became involved in the struggle for the independence of Malaya (now Malaysia) which was successfully realised in 1957.
MIC joined the Alliance together with Umnoand MCA in 1955, before the coalition expanded to become Barisan Nasional in 1973 with the inclusion of more component parties.
