KUALA LUMPUR - Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan says that the proposed charges on vehicles using Jalan Genting Highlands should not be referred to as toll payment, but rather vehicle charges for a private road owned by the operator in the resort area.
He said that using an accurate term was crucial to avoiding confusion, since the country already has 33 existing toll concessionaires.
He also feels that the vehicle charges should only be imposed on visitors using the road for recreational purposes, with workers, landowners and residents in the area exempted from the charges.
"What is the effect of the vehicle charges on the operator of Genting Highlands? I suppose if they put too high a price, then fewer people will visit. That's the risk they have to take.
"Tourists can go to other places that do not have such charges or do not have private roads. My personal opinion is that the vehicle charges should not be imposed on the workers,” he said when winding up the ministry's committee-level debate on the Supply (Budget) Bill 2026 in the Dewan Rakyat today. - BERNAMA
