SHAH ALAM - The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued thunderstorm and continuous rain warnings for several states and territories as of today, due to a low-pressure system over the Straits of Malacca that is forecast to bring heavy rain and strong winds.
A thunderstorm alert was also in effect until 10am for several regions, including Pahang, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka. Authorities have urged residents in the affected areas to remain cautious and make necessary preparations.
In Pahang’s Bera district, the warning covered thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Within Selangor, Klang, Petaling, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat and Sepang were specifically named. Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya were also included under the advisory.
MetMalaysia defined such warnings when rainfall intensity exceeded 20 mm per hour or was expected to persist for more than one hour. The short-term alerts were typically valid for no more than six hours from the time of issuance.
Detailed state forecasts available on MetMalaysia’s website showed that for Selangor on Monday (Nov 24) the day will begin with widespread rain, shift in the afternoon to scattered rain and see isolated rain at night. Minimum and maximum temperatures were expected at 23 °C and 31 °C respectively.
Meanwhile, a separate MetMalaysia update highlighted a low-pressure system located over the Straits of Malacca. Warnings for continuous heavy rain and strong wind warnings in states such as Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak, Pahang and Selangor were in place until Nov 25 while in Kelantan and Terengganu continuous rain was expected to persist until Nov 26.
Given the expected turbulent weather, authorities are advising residents and visitors in affected regions to exercise caution, particularly if outdoors or travelling. The risk of sudden downpours, gusty winds and potential flooding in low-lying areas is elevated.
Key points for Monday, Nov 24:
- Thunderstorm warnings are in effect until 10am in Pahang (Bera), Selangor (Klang, Petaling, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat, Sepang), Negeri Sembilan and Melaka.
- Widespread rain expected in Selangor in the morning, with scattered showers later and isolated rain overnight.
- A low-pressure system over the Straits of Malacca may prolong rainfall and strong winds until at least Tuesday in some states.
Recommended precautions:
- Avoid outdoor activities during thunderstorms or heavy downpours.
- Monitor local flood alerts and stay away from stream banks, low-lying roads and poorly drained areas.
- Secure loose objects and avoid parking vehicles under trees.
- Stay updated via MetMalaysia’s official website or the myCuaca mobile application.
As the monsoon season deepened across Peninsular Malaysia, residents and travellers alike are urged to remain alert to rapidly changing weather conditions.
