PUTRAJAYA - The Education Ministry has activated contingency plans to support Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidates who were affected by the floods, said Education director-general Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad.
He said 259 candidates had been affected by floods as of 5pm Sunday (Nov 23), but all were either relocated to safer accommodations or assisted by government agencies to reach their exam centres.
He said the Education Ministry began flood-risk mapping as early as September, identifying students living in flood-prone areas or near rivers.
“We already know how many students will be affected if flooding occurs, so we took action early.
“All 16 state education departments have also informed me as of 6.30 am that the SPM written exams are proceeding as planned,” he said during a visit to SMK Putrajaya Presint 11(1) on Tuesday (Nov 25).
He also said that as of Monday’s (Nov 24) data, while 259 candidates were affected, most remained at their original centres.
“Only a few were moved to the alternative centres prepared for floods.
“Many high-risk centres typically have few candidates, often just two to four, which is why we have instructed its state education directors to take early action before the floods hit,” he said.
A total of 413,372 candidates are sitting for the 2025 SPM.
Candidates began the examination today with Bahasa Melayu Paper 1, Visual Arts Education Paper 1, and Bahasa Melayu Paper 2. - THE STAR
