SHAH ALAM - Renowned economist Datuk Dr Madeline Berma died at her residence in Bandar Baru Bangi, today.
The 64-year-old Sarawakian left behind a legacy defined by scholarship, compassion and tireless advocacy for the underserved.
News of her passing was shared by her colleagues and friends, including economist Professor Tan Sri Noor Azlan Ghazali, who paid tribute on Facebook.
“I have lost a friend and a scholar who fought for human dignity, particularly in the eradication of poverty. Her contributions to the nation were immense.
“The late Datuk Dr Madeline was a retired academic of UKM (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia) and also a respected UKM alumna. Rest in peace, Datuk Dr Madeline,” he wrote.
Throughout her career, Berma was known for offering thoughtful, in-depth economic perspectives, often sharing clear and grounded insights on issues affecting livelihoods, inequality and development.
Her passing was deeply felt across academic, policy and civil society circles, where she is remembered not only for her intellect, but for her unwavering commitment to human dignity and social progress.
