Sanusi as PN chairman? Pas Ulama chief says ‘interesting idea’

This follows the announcement by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin that he will step down as PN chairman effective Jan 1, 2026.

ALOR SETAR – The proposal to appoint Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor as Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman has been described as an “interesting idea” by Pas Central Ulama Council chief Datuk Ahmad Yahaya.

Ahmad said he agrees with the suggestion, which has begun circulating among political observers and party supporters.

“On Jan 1, 2026, I see many parties proposing YAB Sanusi as Perikatan Nasional chairman. It’s an interesting proposal, and I agree,” he said in a post on his social media page on Thursday.

Ahmad, who is also the Pokok Sena MP, was responding to the announcement by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin that he will step down as PN chairman effective Jan 1, 2026.

On Tuesday, Muhyiddin, who is also Bersatu president, officially confirmed his resignation after leading the coalition for five years since its formation.

The former prime minister has helmed PN since it was formally registered on Aug 7, 2020, and played a key role in shaping the coalition’s political direction at the national level.

Previously, there had been calls from Pas for the PN chairman post to be held by the party, including an open demands by Pas Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden.

In a related development, political tensions in Perlis are believed to have further strained relations between Pas and Bersatu, which have been reported to be increasingly uneasy.

The situation escalated after Sanglang assemblyman Mohd Shukri Ramli of Pas resigned as Perlis Menteri Besar, triggering mixed reactions among PN leaders and supporters.
