KUALA LUMPUR - Issues related to Muafakat Nasional will be among the topics touched on by Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in his policy speech at the Umno Annual General Assembly, says an Umno supreme council member.
Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin said the party president would explain this in detail this coming Friday (Jan 16).
“It's just the usual topics and those that have been lingering - Muafakat Nasional, the recent Umno Youth convention and also the Sabah state elections.
“I am just giving you a teaser. Wait till the president delivers his policy speech where he will elaborate on this,” he told reporters at the World Trade Centre on Wednesday (Jan 14) following a closed-door briefing held by Zahid.
The possibility of reviving cooperation between Umno and Pas was raised during the recent special Umno Youth convention earlier this month.
The proposal, raised by Umno Youth Chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, also included Umno withdrawing from the current unity government.
This, however, drew a negative reaction from the Umno president.
Dr Akmal then hinted at stepping aside from his position. He is the elected Merlimau assemblyman and an exco in the Melaka state government.
Separately, fellow Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan expressed confidence in retaining the coming by-elections for the Kinabatangan parliamentary seat and the Lamag seat in the Sabah state assembly.
“National party leaders are also set to help campaigns there in the coming week,” he said.
The by-elections are set to be held on Jan 24, following the passing of the late Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, who was the incumbent for both seats.
