BUTTERWORTH – A single mother was found dead with slash wounds to her neck at a first-floor unit of Flat Sri Murni, Sungai Dua, here on Tuesday.
The 41-year-old victim was found lying on a bed in one of the rooms in the house.
Police are believed to have received a report at about 1.40pm after a neighbour found that the woman did not respond despite the front door being open, while the metal grille gate was locked.
The victim was understood to have been living in the house with her 15-year-old son.
Police are investigating the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder and are working to determine the motive behind the incident.
The victim’s body was sent to Hospital Kepala Batas for a post-mortem examination.
Penang Police Chief Datuk Azizee Ismail confirmed the incident when contacted.
Meanwhile, Penang Hospital Consultant Pathologist Datuk Dr Zahari Noor confirmed the presence of slash wounds on the victim’s neck.
He said preliminary findings indicated that the injuries were likely inflicted with a sharp weapon.
“There were no signs of a struggle, suggesting that the victim may have been attacked by someone known to her.
“We also believe the victim was attacked from behind. However, a post-mortem examination will be conducted tonight to determine the exact cause of death,” he said when met at the scene.
