MELAKA - A security guard at an institution of higher learning was fined RM2,500 by the Syariah High Court here today after pleading guilty to possessing materials related to the teachings of "The Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light", which have been declared haram under the state fatwa (edict).
Syariah Judge Mohd Yunus Mohamad Zin meted out the fine, in default five months’ imprisonment, on Mohammad Shahirman Akbar Ali Khan, 36.
He paid the fine.
Mohammad Shahirman Akbar was charged with possessing the materials, which included banners, posters, books and documents related to the deviationist teachings at a house in Telok Mas, at about 8am yesterday.
He was charged under Section 63 of the Syariah Offences (Melaka) Enactment 1991 for insulting Islam, which provides a maximum sentence of three years in prison or a fine of RM5,000 or both if convicted.
The prosecution was conducted by Senior Deputy Syariah Prosecutor Muhammad Rafaie Zasari, while the accused was unrepresented. - BERNAMA
