BACHOK - The Home Ministry said the police have opened an investigation into allegations of a plot to topple the government and disrupt national stability following the lodging of a complaint.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the investigation is still at an early stage and declined to elaborate, reported Sinar Harian.
“At last Friday’s Cabinet meeting, it was decided that regardless of the nature of a complaint, the police must give priority to conducting an investigation.
“In this case, it began with a party lodging a complaint and we had to commence an investigation, but it is still too early,” he told reporters at a sahur event with clients held in conjunction with the Pure Values Implementation Programme at the Bachok Narcotics Addiction Rehabilitation Centre here on Sunday (Mar 1).
He said the complaint formed the basis for the police to determine the direction and motive of the investigation.
He added that all aspects of the matter need to be viewed in their entirety.
Earlier, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, in a statement, said the police had launched an investigation into allegations of a plot to overthrow the government and sabotage national stability involving an influential local individual and an international media organisation.
He said a report on the matter was received on Saturday and that the investigation is being carried out by the Classified Criminal Investigation Unit, Prosecution/Legal Division (D5), Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department, under Section 124B of the Penal Code.
He added that the investigation is still underway and advised the public not to speculate on the case while it is ongoing, in order to uphold the principles of criminal justice in this country. - THE STAR
