SHAH ALAM - Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) has proposed that the government consider implementing a targeted work-from-home (WFH) policy for selected sectors following the surge in global oil prices amid geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

Its chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim said the move could help ease traffic congestion in urban areas, reduce transportation costs for the public and lower fuel consumption in the current economic situation.

“The policy could first be implemented in government offices, government agencies, government-linked companies and government-linked investment companies, before being expanded to suitable private sector organisations according to their operational needs.

“At the same time, the measure could help the government manage fuel subsidy spending more prudently while easing the financial burden on the public affected by rising global oil prices,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

Previously, tensions in West Asia escalated after the United States (US) and Israel launched attacks on Iran on Feb 28, prompting Tehran to retaliate by striking US bases and key facilities in the region.

Kamil said the proposal was a proactive step to reduce movement among the public, which could help save petrol consumption and reduce spending on fuel subsidies, particularly for RON95 petrol.

He added that a flexible approach such as allowing employees to work from home for several days a week could also be considered depending on the suitability of each department, agency or organisation.

“The approach is in line with efforts to improve work-life balance while supporting sustainability goals through reduced vehicle usage and lower carbon emissions,” he said.
