Man killed in hit-and-run while refuelling car on roadside

IPOH - A man was killed while helping to refuel his friend’s vehicle on the roadside in a hit-and-run incident at KM2.6 of the East-West Highway (JRTB) Gerik-Jeli near Gerik yesterday.

Gerik district police chief Supt Abdul Samad Othman said police received information about the incident at about 5.15 pm.

"Initial investigations found that a Proton Saga driven by a man had run out of fuel, and he contacted the 21-year-old victim to deliver petrol. The victim then rode a motorcycle to the location.

"While they were refuelling the car on the right side of the road, they were suddenly hit by a white car travelling in the same direction from Jeli towards Gerik. The model of the car has yet to be identified,” he said in a statement today.

Abdul Samad said the victim was taken to the Emergency Unit of Gerik Hospital with severe injuries but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at about 10.50 pm.

He said the victim’s friend was not injured.

He added that police are actively tracking down the driver of the white car, who fled the scene.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
