SHAH ALAM — Selangor Pas Youth has called on Lynas Rare Earths Ltd and the Malaysian government to address growing concerns over reports linking rare earth supplies to the United States (US) defence sector.

Its chief Mohamed Sukri Omar said the issue warrants serious attention due to the strategic role of rare earth elements in modern military technologies such as radar systems, missiles and satellites.

“This agreement raises concerns because rare earth elements are used in radar, missile systems, satellites as well as components in high-technology defence industries.

“Lynas must provide a clear and transparent explanation on whether materials processed at its Malaysian facilities form part of the supply chain to the Pentagon.

“The US military support for the Zionist Israeli regime, which continues to attack Palestinians in Gaza, is also a major concern for Muslims worldwide,” he told Sinar Daily.

Sukri called on the company to provide greater transparency by disclosing details on the origin of its raw materials, the locations of its processing activities and the extent to which facilities in Malaysia are involved in the reported agreement.

He emphasised that as a foreign company operating in the country, Lynas carries a moral and corporate responsibility to ensure its operations do not give rise to sensitive geopolitical implications for Malaysia.

He also stressed that the government must clearly state its position on the issue, as it extends beyond commercial interests and involves considerations related to national security and the country’s international standing.

“The people have the right to know whether Malaysia is indirectly part of a strategic supply chain supporting the military industry of global powers.

“Safeguards must be in place to prevent national resources from being channelled into military industries of countries involved in global conflicts,” he said.

Sukri highlighted the strategic importance of rare earth resources, stressing that Malaysia should prioritise developing a strong domestic value chain to support technological advancement and drive economic growth.

Selangor Pas Youth urged Lynas and the government to provide a comprehensive explanation on the matter, emphasising the need to safeguard national interests and address public sensitivities.

Previously, it was reported that Lynas signed a binding letter of intent with the US Department of Defense to finalise a four-year agreement to supply the US defence sector with rare earth minerals.
