Existing legislation must be amended to enable harsher penalties.

KLANG - Calls for stricter laws on drunk and drug-impaired driving have intensified following a fatal accident on Jalan Raya Barat that claimed the life of a motorcyclist.

Selangor Executive Councillor for Human Resources and Poverty Eradication, Papparaidu Veraman, said existing legislation must be amended to enable harsher penalties, including maximum imprisonment and whipping, as a strong deterrent against such offences.

“This incident clearly shows the urgent need to tighten penalties as a preventive measure. Cases involving intoxicated driving are becoming increasingly common and are no longer isolated incidents, often resulting in the deaths of innocent individuals.

“It is even more heartbreaking when such negligence claims the life of someone completely innocent,” he said.

Papparaidu added that stricter enforcement must accompany legal reforms to ensure meaningful impact and to instil greater responsibility among road users.

He also called for immediate assistance to be provided to the victim’s family, highlighting that the deceased was the sole breadwinner with two young children.

“The lives of the people should not be put at risk due to the irresponsible behaviour of a few. Roads must be safe for everyone,” he said.
