SHAH ALAM – When it comes to happiness, big cities often get the spotlight. But Malaysia’s latest list tells a different story.
The Housing and Local Government Ministryhas unveiled the 10 happiest towns in Malaysia for 2026 and most of them are smaller, quieter places spread across Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah.
Among those recognised are Dabong, Kelantan; Kluang, Johor; Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu; Bandar Lipis, Pahang and Marang, Terengganu.
Also making the list are Mersing, Johor; Permaisuri, Terengganu; Ranau, Sabah; Raub, Pahang and Simpang Renggam, Johor.
According to the ministry, the recognition is based on assessments of residents’ well-being and overall quality of life, in line with the government’s push to create more sustainable and liveable urban environments.
Notably, the list reflects a balance between small and mid-sized towns across different states, reinforcing the idea that happiness isn’t confined to major cities.
The recognition also aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen community well-being through inclusive development, with continued focus on basic amenities, living environments and social balance.
